DrLupo’s Cheating Scandal at PogChamps 6: What Happened and Why It Matters

Popular streamer Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo was recently embroiled in a high-profile cheating scandal during the $100,000 PogChamps 6 online chess tournament. The event, hosted by Chess.com, is known for featuring streamers and celebrities in a fun, competitive environment designed to introduce chess to new audiences. DrLupo, a well-known figure in the gaming and streaming world, was caught using top chess engine (a software tool that analyzes positions and suggests optimal moves) moves during his matches, most notably after a critical mistake where he lost his queen.

Observers quickly noticed a dramatic and inexplicable improvement in DrLupo’s play, including a flawless sequence of engine-level moves despite his low rating and recent blunder. His behavior on stream, such as glancing at off-screen monitors and inconsistent commentary, further fueled suspicions. Initially, DrLupo denied the allegations, attributing his performance to a “good game.” However, after mounting evidence and public scrutiny, he admitted to using engine assistance, calling his actions “pathetic” and apologizing for betraying the trust of the chess and streaming communities.

Chess.com responded swiftly, banning DrLupo for a “fair play violation” and removing him from the tournament.

The DrLupo scandal is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges chess faces with cheating, especially in the online era. Cheating rates in high-level online chess events remain low, but even a small fraction is unacceptable given the stakes and the spirit of fair competition.
